A Taste of Tradition: Celebrating the Kentucky Derby with Food, Cocktails, and Community
There is a buzz in the air that only the Kentucky Derby can bring. The first Saturday in May isn't just about horses—it's about hospitality, flavor, and the unmistakable spirit of celebration. At Bourbon Barrel Foods, we’re proud to honor the Derby’s rich heritage with local flavors, time-honored traditions, and exciting events that welcome all.
Henry Bain’s Sauce – A Louisville Classic
No Derby spread is complete without a nod to local culinary legends. Originally crafted in the early 1900s at Louisville’s Pendennis Club, Henry Bain’s Sauce has become a staple on Derby Day menus. Its sweet and tangy flavor pairs beautifully with beef, pork, and burgers. We’re proud to offer our this iconic sauce—perfect for elevating your next party platter or Derby dinner.
Try it: Serve thin slices of beef tenderloin on mini rolls with a generous drizzle of Henry Bain’s Sauce. Add pickled onions or arugula for an extra bite.
A Derby Classic: The Mint Julep
Nothing says Derby quite like the refreshing chill of a mint julep. Traditionally made with bourbon, fresh mint, sugar, and crushed ice, it’s been the official drink of the Derby for nearly a century. Our Woodford Reserve Mint Julep Cocktail Syrup takes the guesswork out of crafting this crowd favorite, offering a balanced blend that’s ready to pour over ice and bourbon.
Quick Mint Julep Recipe:
- 2 oz Woodford Reserve® Bourbon
- ½ oz Woodford Reserve® Mint Julep Syrup
- Crushed ice
- Fresh mint for garnish
Gently muddle mint, pour over crushed ice, stir, and sip!
Classic Mint Julep Recipe (Using Sugar Cubes):

- Muddle the sugar cubes and mint leaves with a splash of water in a julep cup or rocks glass.

Thurby Tradition: Old Fashioneds with a Twist
For locals, the Thursday before Derby—known as "Thurby"—has become its own celebration. It’s the perfect time to gather friends and toast the coming weekend with a classic Old Fashioned. Our favorite version uses bourbon, a dash of bitters, and a sugar cube soaked in orange zest and a splash of water.
Old Fashioned Recipe with a Sugar Cube:
- 1 Bourbon Smoked Sugar Cube (Derby Promo)
- 2–3 dashes bitters
- 1 orange peel
- 2 oz Kentucky Bourbon
- Ice
Muddle the sugar, bitters, and orange zest at the bottom of a glass. Add bourbon and ice, stir, and enjoy.
